Saturday & Sunday, March 29 & 30, Texas Men's State Chili & BBQ Championship Cook-off: Blanco County Fairgrounds. Come sample the creations of Texas' best chili and barbecue cooks at this family-friendly event, complete with food, arts & crafts and many other vendors. Proceeds go to charity. Friday, April 4-6, The Touring T's of Bryan/College Station hosting a tour for fifty original Model A & T Fords (1908-1927): The tour will hub from Johnson City Texas at the local Best Western motel. There will be daily 100+ mile routes touring the local area enjoying the wild flowers and area attractions. A brunch will culminate the tour on Sunday. This tour is a benefit tour to raise money for the treatment of Ataxia Telangiectasia, money will be sent to TreatAT out of Austin Texas. Saturday, April 5: Ninth Annual Pedal Power Wildflower Ride: Benefiting the Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center (HCCAC), to be held at 9am at LBJ State Park near Stonewall, Texas. Cyclists of all ages are invited to ride the prettiest routes in the Texas Hill Country. Ride options include 12-, 23-, 36- and 62-mile routes. The Pedal Power Wildflower Ride is designated as a BP MS 150 recommended ride. Ride registration forms are located at numerous bicycle shops around Central Texas as well as online at www.hccac.org. Riders can also sign up at www.signmeup.com/58882. Proceeds from the ride support HCCAC services for physically and sexually abused children in a seven county area. About HCCAC: The Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center is a non-profit organization that provides services at no cost to physically and sexually abused children and their non-offending family members. The Center also offers training to professionals and volunteers, and promotes public awareness of abuse issues. HCCAC provides services in a seven county area, including Blanco, Burnet, Lampasas, Llano, Mason, Mills, and San Saba counties. April 19 & 20, 2008, Johnson City Texas Wildflower Days – The Spirit of The Hill Country. Come enjoy an exciting celebration and our gorgeous wildflowers. We will have wildflower touring maps, a historic homes and gardens tour, wildflower photography workshop, a farmer's market with food & product vendors, arts and crafts, live musical entertainment and fun activities for the whole family, all in a relaxing Hill Country setting. April 19, LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour: The National Park Service and the Friends of LBJ National Park have joined forces with the San Antonio based Hill Country Bicycle Touring Club to produce a bicycle event that will appeal to everyone from novice rider to experienced competitor. More information can be found on the web at: www.LBJ100bicycletour.org and www.FriendsofLBJNationalPark.org. The rides will originate and end at the Ranch and will include 10, 31 and 45 mile rides with the option to increase the ride to 62 miles (a metric 100). The event promises to be one of our largest events of the 2008 Centennial celebration.

April 19-20, 2008 Relay For Life: This American Cancer Society fundraising event will be held Saturday night through Sunday at the JC High School Football field. For info, call 833-5584.

OTHER LOCAL NEWS:

Whittington's Jerky and General store and our Suzy Q's Store: Every 3rd Saturday of the month will be having sales on certain items. The discount will be 25-50% off. To find out what will be discounted you can check the local newspaper or call the stores.

Chamber Visitor Center: We are serving visitors every day, greeting them, providing information and enthusiasm for JC. We receive lots or postal and email requests for information. We still need volunteers to help staff the office and assist visitors. We also need volunteers to assist the Chamber Directors with a variety of projects. Come join our fun team and serve a great purpose (you do not need to be a Chamber member). Office: 830-868-7684, located at 100 East Main, Johnson City. Meet MJ Love, our Visitor Center Coordinator, and some of our volunteer assistants.

Advertising Opportunity: The Pedal Power Bike Ride will have 800-ish participants (plus travel companions) April 5 (see Chamber calendar for details), hubbed out of Stonewall but with activity in Johnson City. The event organizers are offering that any of our area businesses that want to provide items (coupons, brochures, rack cards, advertising items, etc.) to be inserted in the participants Goody Bags may do so. Bring them to the Chamber office by March 20.

Advertising Opportunity: A Model A & T Fords (1908-1927) Touring Club Event: April 4 through April 6, will hub from Johnson City Texas at the local Best Western motel. About 50 vehicles and 100 people coming to our town to relax, shop, dine, etc. Any area business that wants to provide discount coupons, brochures, or other items for their 50 Goody Bags may deliver them to our Chamber Visitors Center by March 20, and we will complete the arrangements from there.

Kirchman Gallery will open their second location in JC:
You may have noticed the major renovation of the old washateria building at 305 East Main Street in front of the Baptist Church. They will sell fine art, glass and jewelry. 830-868-9290.

Pop Eye franchise: We hear this is coming to JC, to occupy an existing building on 281. Just a rumor, no confirmation yet. Same about a new building and a new hamburger place.

Pasquale’s Update: The property owner is demolishing the building and will offer a build to lease option. At the 281/290 intersection in Johnson City.
